Every year at Celtic Christmas they announce the lineup for the following year’s festival. And every year I always hope it’s going to feature Sharon Shannon. It has been nearly 30 years since I first encountered her magical accordion playing, and it is rare to find a musician whose playing gives me such joy. It’s six years since her last visit to Japan, owing to the Covid pandemic, and to be honest I am experiencing withdrawal symptoms.
Sharon is from Galway in the west of Ireland, and played on Texan singer/songwriter Steve Earle’s 2000 classic “Galway Girl.” She then covered the song herself in 2008 with Irish singer Mundy, and it became a big hit in Ireland, earning Sharon her much-deserved stardom. Despite her calm demeanor playing sitting down, the energy emanating from her small button accordion is incredible.
Liam Ó Maonlaí and special guest Paul Brady, who also will be performing at this year’s Celtic Christmas, are both great singers, and I’m looking forward very much to hearing them. However, when it comes to emotional pull, sorry guys, but it’s Sharon that has got my excitement level peaking. This year is going to be an excellent gig.
